Sweet potato dog chews are one of the most popular homemade dog treats
for good reason. Naturally sweet, packed with vitamins and incredibly
gentle on sensitive stomachs — they're the perfect alternative to meat
based treats and dogs absolutely love them.
Why Sweet Potato?
Sweet potato is one of the most nutritious vegetables you can give your
dog. Rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, fibre and potassium, they're a
genuinely healthy treat rather than just an empty snack. They're also
naturally sweet which makes them incredibly palatable even for fussy dogs.
They're particularly good for:
- Dogs with chicken or meat allergies
- Dogs with sensitive stomachs
- Puppies being introduced to treats for the first time
- Older dogs who need something easier to chew
What You'll Need
- 2 large sweet potatoes
- Ezidri FD1000 with mesh sheets
Nothing else needed — sweet potato is naturally sweet and flavoursome
enough on its own.
How to Make Sweet Potato Dog Chews
1. Preheat your Ezidri FD1000 to 55°C
2. Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly — no need to peel although
you can if preferred
3. Slice into rounds approximately 5mm thick —
try to keep slices as uniform as possible for even drying
4. Pat dry with kitchen paper
5. Lay in a single layer on mesh sheets — do not overlap
6. Dry at 55°C for 6 to 8 hours until leathery and chewy
7. For a crispier treat dry for up to 10 hours
8. Allow to cool completely before storing
Dryness Test
The chews should be leathery and flexible but with no moisture
remaining. If they feel soft or damp in the middle return to
the Ezidri for another hour.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place for up to
4 weeks. Refrigerate for up to 2 months.
Tips for Best Results
- Choose firm, fresh sweet potatoes — avoid any that are
soft or showing signs of sprouting
- Keep slices as uniform as possible — uneven slices will
dry at different rates

make a large batch in one go
- Try cutting into strips rather than rounds for a different
shape your dog might enjoy
A Note on Portions
Sweet potato is healthy but still contains natural sugars.
Treat these as an occasional treat rather than a daily staple,
particularly for dogs watching their weight.
