Banana chips are one of the simplest and most satisfying
snacks you can make with a food dehydrator. Naturally sweet,
packed with potassium and energy — and kids love them.
Once you've made your own you'll never buy the shop bought
version again.
Why Make Your Own Banana Chips?
Shop bought banana chips are often fried in oil and coated
in added sugar — which rather defeats the point of eating
fruit. Homemade banana chips made with the Ezidri FD1000
are simply dried banana — nothing added, nothing removed
except the water.
What You'll Need
- 4 ripe bananas
- Optional: lemon or citrus juice to prevent browning
- Ezidri FD1000 with mesh sheets
How to Make Banana Chips
1. Preheat Ezidri FD1000 to 55°C
2. Peel bananas and slice into rounds
approximately 5mm thick
3. Optional: dip slices briefly in lemon juice
to prevent browning — this is purely cosmetic
and doesn't affect flavour
4. Pat dry with kitchen paper
5. Arrange in a single layer on mesh sheets —
do not overlap
6. Dry at 55°C for 12 to 16 hours until completely
dry and chewy
7. For crispier chips dry for up to 18 hours
8. Allow to cool completely before storing —
they will crisp up further as they cool
Dryness Test
Banana chips should be leathery and chewy with no
moisture remaining. For crisper chips they should
snap cleanly when bent.
Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature
for up to 2 weeks. Do not refrigerate as moisture
will soften the chips.
Tips for Best Results
- Use ripe but firm bananas — overripe bananas
will be too soft to slice cleanly
- Dried bananas will never go completely crisp
like shop bought versions due to their high
sugar content — expect a chewy texture
- Try sprinkling with a tiny pinch of cinnamon
before drying for extra flavour
- Make large batches — bananas are cheap and
the Ezidri FD1000 can handle up to 30 trays
in one run
